Chat backup
Backups only you can open
Your chats live on your phone. Turn on chat backup to keep an encrypted copy, locked with a key only you have, and bring your chats to a new phone.

How it works
- Your choiceChat backup is off until you turn it on, in Profile, Chat backup.
- Locked on your phoneYour messages, and photos if you choose, are encrypted on your phone before they’re uploaded. Rabt keeps the encrypted copy but can’t open it.
- A recovery key you keepRabt shows you a recovery key. Save it somewhere safe, like a password manager. Your key is also kept with your Apple or Google account, so a new phone can usually find it by itself.
- Wi-Fi firstBackups run on Wi-Fi unless you allow mobile data.
Restoring on a new phone
- Newest firstYour recent chats come back in seconds, then older history, then photos. You can use Rabt while it finishes.
- One phone at a timeChats work on one phone at a time, so restoring on a new phone moves your chats there.
Always in your control
- Turn it off any timeYour last backup is kept for 30 days in case you change your mind, then deleted for good.
- Delete your account, delete your backupDeleting your Rabt account deletes your backup too.
Questions
Can Rabt read my backup?
No. Your backup is encrypted on your phone with a key only you have. Rabt stores it, but can’t open it.
What if I lose my recovery key?
If your Apple or Google account still has your key, a new phone can find it on its own. If neither is available, the backup can’t be opened, by you or by us. That’s what keeps it private.
What’s included?
Your chats and messages, and your photos if you choose to include them.
Do I have to use backup?
No. It’s off until you turn it on. Without it, your chats stay only on your phone.
